Are you cyber smart? October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2021, as declared by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Each week of this month follows a different theme— the first is ‘Be Cyber Smart’. At alphatech, we want to invite you to take this as an opportunity to review your cyber security, and we’ll give you some tips on how to keep safe and secure online.
One of the best ways to protect your data is to use a strong password. An ideal password is long, contains both upper- and lower-case letters, includes numbers and symbols, and does not rely on your personal information. Although it might be tempting to use something very easy to remember, you should consider that the simpler and more identifiable your password is, the easier it will be for malicious actors to gain access to your data. You should also avoid using the same password in multiple places, as a single breach could give someone access to all of your information. Furthermore, multi-factor authentication can further strengthen your data protection, giving you peace of mind.
Once you are satisfied that your data is protected from external threats, you should also secure your data storage. Back up everything that you don’t want to lose— it’s always better to be safe than sorry! Updating your software is also important, as security issues can be discovered and patched over time. This ensures that it is harder for hackers to gain access to your data, and closes loopholes or weaknesses that have the potential to be exploited.
As demonstrated by the tips we’ve given you, actively protecting and securing your data doesn’t have to be time consuming or complicated; it’s an easy way to prevent much bigger issues in the future. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, make sure that you are managing your online presence proactively— Do Your Part, #BeCyberSmart.
